September 2017 - Greater Kudu in Addo Elephant National Park:

On a visit to Addo NP in September 2017 at the start of the rainy season we were surprised to see unusually large groups of Greater Kudu. These included one group of 16 females and their young, and a group of 22 adult males.

In the literature it is cited that female groups may gather together with an average of 7-10 individuals but a maximum of 21 is on record. In the case of bulls in Kruger NP 3-4 is the average and the largest group in that park numbered 12 animals. Elsewhere the highest number on record was a gathering of 25 individuals.

But neither in Addo, or anywhere else in the Eastern Cape for that matter, have we ever encountered such large single sex herds.
